Lake Forest clips Grinnell softball team in thrilling MWC doubleheader

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - In what could well have been a preview of a Midwest Conference Tournament matchup, Grinnell College and Lake Forest College squared off Saturday with the host Foresters pulling out wins of 14-5 and 9-8.

The second game was as thrilling as one gets, with the lead shuffling back and forth the entire way before the Foresters scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to win.

Grinnell's offense produced 12 hits, with Taylor Durak '24 and Hannah Dykstra '25 getting three apiece and Sofia DiCarlo '25 adding two.

Dykstra had a two-run homer in the top of the first to put Grinnell (10-12, 0-2 MWC) on top, but the Foresters answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and three in the second.

The Pioneers retook the lead with four runs in the third as Durak hit a two-run homer and Baily Isaak '27 and Samantha Chu '24 each drew bases-loaded walks.

Lake Forest (10-8, 2-0 MWC) tied it at 6-all in the fourth before each team scored once in the sixth, with Grinnell's run coming on DiCarlo's RBI single to center. The Pioneers went ahead 8-7 in the top of the seventh on Dykstra's RBI single up the middle.

Christin Hartman '24 struck out five in a complete-game pitching effort for Grinnell.

The final score of the opener was deceiving considering the teams were tied 4-all in the early going. Grinnell got its runs in the first and second innings on a two-run homer to center by Durak and two-run shot to center by Chu.

Lake Forest led 6-4 after two innings and built the cushion to 9-4 after four innings. Grinnell got its final run in the top of the fifth on Isaak's RBI single up the middle, but the Foresters ended the game via the run rule by scoring five times in the bottom of the inning.

Kathryn Vermeulen '24, Grinnell's pitcher of record, had one strikeout in a complete-game effort.

During the games, Durak moved up to fourth in program history for total bases (211) and doubles (31), fifth in hits (130) and eighth in runs scored (77). Kambria Anson '24 went to seventh for runs scored with 78. On the fielding front, Chu now ranks fifth in program history with 243 assists.

The Pioneers are slated to play at Beloit College Sunday.
