Grinnell softball team's historic season ends with loss in NCAA Regional Tourney

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Grinnell College's historic softball season drew to a close Friday afternoon with a loss in the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament.

The Pioneers, who finished with the second-highest win total in program history and a history-making senior class, lost 4-1 to top seed and tourney host Washington University in an elimination game.

The third-seeded Pioneers, who finished at 27-16, battled the Bears to a scoreless tie through four innings. Grinnell did threaten in the third inning as Lindsey Schultz '27 singled to left field with one out and Samantha Chu '24 - who was named to the All-Regional Tournament - walked with two out.

The hosts scored twice in the top of the fifth, but Grinnell made a mark on the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame. Sofia DiCarlo '25 blasted a double to right-center field to start the frame and Kyra Killion '24 walked. After a pair of strikeouts, Chu - who had two hits in the game - sent an RBI single up the middle and Killion went to third before being stranded.

The 27-11 Bears tacked on a run in the top of the sixth to make it 3-1 with one out before action was halted for two hours due to a lightning delay. When play resumed, Christin Hartman '24 sat down the next two Bears' batters.

Grinnell made some noise in the bottom of the sixth when Hannah Dykstra '25 walked with one out and Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 - who had two hits in the game - hit an infield single. Dykstra went to third on a fielder's choice but was left there.

The Bears added a run in top of the seventh for a 4-1 lead. Chu singled through the middle with two out in the bottom of the seventh before the game ended.

Hartman had a strong pitching performance against the Bears, striking out two.

During the game, Grinnell set team season school records for at-bats (1,187), fielding chances (1,225) and fielding putouts (823). Kambria Anson '24 moved up to fifth for career at-bats during the game with 414 and Okada jumped to 10th with 369.
