Grinnell softball's stellar senior class enjoys successful home finale

GRINNELL, Iowa - In what arguably is the best and deepest senior class in Grinnell College women's athletics history, it's only fitting that group go out on a successful note in the final game on their home diamond.

Grinnell bounced back from a 7-5 setback to Illinois College Saturday at the Softball Complex with a 9-0 mercy-rule blanking of the Lady Blues. The win marked the 10th shutout of the season for Grinnell, which ties a school record.

Kathryn Vermeulen '24, Grinnell's career leader for pitching victories, was electric in the finale by tossing a complete-game three-hitter while striking out two. She now ranks third in program history with six shutouts. The Pioneers' offense accumulated six hits, with Kambria Anson '24 getting two of those.

Grinnell never left the game to doubt, erupting for five runs in the first inning as Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 belted a two-run single through the left side, Sofia DiCarlo '25 hit a two-run double to left and Vermeulen lofted a sacrifice fly to right.

In the team's three-run second inning, Anson hit an RBI single through the left side and Hannah Dykstra '25 had a two-run single to left. Taylor Durak '24 added an RBI single up the middle in the third.

Grinnell wrapped up the second seed in the Midwest Conference Tournament with the win, improving to 13-3 in the league and 24-14 overall. Illinois College, which will be either the third or fourth seed, is 11-3 in the MWC and 18-19 in all games.

In the opener, Illinois College shot out to a 7-0 lead with six runs in the fourth inning and another in the sixth. But the Pioneers wouldn't go quietly, scoring five in the bottom of the seventh. Kyra Killion '24 walked with the bases loaded, DiCarlo had a sacrifice fly to right, Lindsey Schultz '27 knocked in a run while reaching on an error, Alexa Okada '24 hit an RBI double to right and Anson scored on an error.

Durak, who had two of Grinnell's four hits in the game, now ranks third in program history with 99 runs scored and 51 walks and is fifth in at-bats with 401. Anson ranks sixth in at-bats with 399 and Okada is eighth in doubles with 23. Also during the day, Dykstra tied the season school record for walks with 27.
