Grinnell defends title at UW-Whitewater Warhawk Invite tennis event

Pioneers win 3 of 6 division crowns

WHITEWATER, Wis. - In 2023, Grinnell College's women's tennis team kicked off what would be a historically-successful season by winning the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Invite.

The Pioneers repeated that title accomplishment Saturday, taking top honors at the highly-competitive event. Grinnell finished with 46 points, two ahead of the tournament host Warhawks. Luther College was a distant third with 32 points.

A balanced effort sparked the Pioneers, as they won three of the six divisions and finished no lower than third in any of them. Grinnell captured the No. 1 doubles crown with senior leaders Erin Jarvis '25 and Lily Perrin '25, and added titles at Nos. 2 and 3 singles with Pari Chavan '27 and Nehir Ergun '26, respectively.

The No. 3 doubles squad of Tan Mukherjee '26 and Kalea Martin '25 captured second place, while third place went to Paige Sargent '27 at No. 1 singles and the duo of Anika Sheth '26 and Utsah Kalra '25 at No. 2 doubles.

Jarvis and Perrin were the top seed and advanced to the finals, where they beat the second-seeded team from UW-Whitewater 8-7. Chavan and Ergun were both unseeded. Chavan defeated the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds to reach the final, and then beat the top seed from UW-Whitewater 6-3, 2-6, 11-9. Ergun also beat the 2 and 3 seeds before toppling the No. 1 seed from the host school 7-6, 6-3.

Mukherjee and Martin made it all the way to the finals before falling 8-7 to a squad from Luther. Sargent bounced back from a semifinal loss to win 6-1, 6-3 over a team from UW-Eau Claire in the third-place match. Sheth and Kalra also came back from a semifinal setback to beat a squad from UW-La Crosse 8-5.
