Grinnell falls in 5-set thriller to Nebraska Wesleyan netters

GRINNELL, Iowa - It was expected to be a thriller, and the participants didn't disappoint.

Grinnell College's volleyball team took the opening two sets against Nebraska Wesleyan University Wednesday night at Darby Gymnasium, but the Prairie Wolves bounced back and got the final three to secure the victory. Set scores, in favor of the visitors, were 23-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19 and 16-14.

Grinnell (6-2) trailed most of the first set before a three-point run put the hosts on top 18-17. After Nebraska Wesleyan (7-2) tied it, Grinnell reeled off four points in a row in a string that included kills by Keira Sullivan '27, Millie Leonard '27 and Nicole Mlynski '26. The visitors closed within 24-23, but Sullivan finished it off with a kill.

The Pioneers rode that momentum into the second set, using a five-point run to go ahead 7-2. Sullivan had a kill during that span as Grinnell was never challenged.

Nebraska Wesleyan took the next two sets to set up the exciting conclusion. Grinnell broke away from a 10-all tie with a three-point run that included a kill from Sullivan and ace by Gabby Choy '26. Leonard's kill a bit later put the Pioneers at match point with a 14-12 lead, but the Prairie Wolves reeled off four points in a row to secure the win.

Jenna Keller '25 led Grinnell with 17 kills, while Sullivan posted 14. Emily Brewer '25 dished out 36 assists and also served two aces to place her ninth on the Pioneers' career list with 127. Kylie-Ann Smith '27 added 11 assists.

Sullivan, Hayley Taka '26, Ella O'Neill '25 and Leonard all had two blocks. Keller also had 30 digs, Sophie Weber '25 added 25, Brewer had 12 and Smith 10.
