Pioneer women's soccer team puts together complete match while blanking Benedictine

GRINNELL, Iowa - With a lengthy break in its schedule approaching, Grinnell College was looking to enter the hiatus on a good note.

The Pioneers did that, and then some, by blanking Benedictine University of Illinois 4-0 Saturday afternoon at Springer Field.

Grinnell (3-2-1) put together a complete match, owning the shots battle 21-2 while posting its third shutout of the year.

Campbell Swaim '28 scored the first two goals of her collegiate career, while Katie Carson '25 and Sarah Travis '27 also found the back of the net.

Grayson Allison '28 played for the first time collegiately at the keeper spot and came away with a clean sheet.

The Pioneers struck for three goals in the first half, with Carson scoring in the 13th minute and Swaim adding goals in the 31st and 43rd minutes.

Carson scored her first goal of the season and third in her career when she delivered a perfect corner kick from the left side that bounced off the crossbar and into the right side of the net.

Swain made it 2-0 when she received a beautiful pass from Ramona Delborne '26 directly in front of the box and sent the ball past the diving keeper into the bottom left portion of the net.

Delborne assisted another of Swaim's goals with just over a minute to go in the half, sending a pass into her teammate in the right side box. Swaim beat her defender and sent a hard shot into the center of the net.

Travis finished the scoring with a spectacular goal on a free kick from 35 yards out on the left side. The ball was perfect, finding the upper right part of the net that the keeper from Benedictine (0-5-1) didn't have a chance of saving. It was the first goal of Travis' career.

Delborne had six of Grinnell's shots, Swaim added five and Rama Joshi '27 tallied three. Travis and Carson posted two each.

The Pioneers are off until Sept. 28 when they open Midwest Conference play at home against Lake Forest College.
