Pioneer volleyball team splits matches on final day of Macalester Invite

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Grinnell College volleyball team collected a split on the final day of the Macalester Invite Saturday.

The Pioneers opened with a 3-1 victory over Lewis & Clark College of Oregon, which is coached by GC alum and former Pioneer assistant coach Erin Labasan. Grinnell lost the opening set 25-23, but then rolled off wins of 25-20, 25-22 and 25-14.

The three-tiered attack machine of Jenna Keller '25, Hayley Taka '26 and Millie Leonard '27 combined for 41 kills, with Keller and Taka having 14 and Leonard 13. Taka hit .297.

Emily Brewer '25 added 31 assists and Marlowe Hurst '28 tallied 14. Leonard put up three aces and three blocks, while Sophie Weber '25 and Keller posted 13 and 12 digs, respectively.

Grinnell then lost 3-1 to Carleton College. The Knights won the first two sets 25-15 and 25-23 before the Pioneers took the third 25-22. However, Carleton came back to take the next set 25-21.

Keller led Grinnell with 22 kills while hitting .278, and Taka put up 10 kills. Brewer led the way in assists with 25 and Weber served up four aces. Ella O'Neill '25 tallied two blocks and Weber had 21 digs. Also in double-digit digs were Brewer with 18, Keller with 14 and Taka and Gabby Choy '26 with 11 apiece.

Brewer moved up to fourth on Grinnell's career assists list with 2,804 and Weber is eighth in digs with 1,242. Keller popped up to 10th for career kills with 865.

Grinnell, 9-3, will host Simpson College at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
