Lopez's 4-victory day propels Grinnell women to comfortable lead at own Invite

Pioneers lead the field by more than 300 points after Day 1

GRINNELL, Iowa - With Sarah Lopez '26 leading the pack by claiming four event victories, Grinnell College's women's swimming diving team kicked off its own Grinnell Invite on a strong note Friday.


Lopez earned individual victories at Russell K. Osgood Pool in the 200 butterfly in 2 minutes, 7.58 seconds and 100 backstroke in 58.17. She also swam legs on the winning 400 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay teams that had times of 3:59.79 and 7:59.53, respectively. 

Grinnell has 733.5 points after Day 1 of the meet, well ahead of runners-up Nebraska Wesleyan University and St. Ambrose University. Those teams scored 373.5 points each.

Rounding out the 800 team for Grinnell were Maya Comer '28, Aliya Swearngin '25 and Samantha Cook '27, while Bella Takata '28, Camryn Gonzales '25 and Sophia Carroll '25 completed the 400 squad.

Carroll added an individual victory in the 500 freestyle in 5:11.58 and swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay team that won in 1:38.00, the fourth-best time in program history. Others on the 200 free team were Ciara Vogler '26, Gonzales and Cook.

Carroll was runner-up in the 100 freestyle in 53.05, while third place went to Gonzales in the 100 individual medley (1:02.68), Takata in the 200 individual medley (2:15.13) and Cook in the 500 freestyle (5:18.31). Fourth place went to Joely Kam '28 in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.45), Gonzales in the 100 freestyle (54.32) and Vivian Woare '28 in the 200 butterfly (2:16.24). Kam went 2:29.21 in the 200 breaststroke prelims, which ranks seventh in program history.

Comer was fifth in the 500 freestyle in 5:20.65, the 17th-best time in program history. Others placing fifth were Olivia Pluska '25 in the 100 backstroke (1:02.00) and Eva Cuevas '25 in the 200 breaststroke (2:32.69).

Grinnell had a trio of sixth-place finishers, Molly Ryan '27 in the 200 individual medley (2:18.66), Cook in the 100 freestyle (55.25) and Natasha Zettler '27 in the 200 butterfly (2:18.05).

In the prelims Friday morning, Woare swam 2:14.07 in the 200 butterfly, which ranks 15th in program history, and Comer had a time of 2:32.78 in the 200 breaststroke, which ranks 18th.

The meet continues at 9 a.m. Saturday.
