GC volleyball team celebrates start of fall break with pair of sweeps

GRINNELL, Iowa - The opening day of fall break proved to be a successful one for the Grinnell College volleyball team, as the Pioneers blanked both Luther College and Faith Baptist Bible by 3-0 scores Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.

The 9-11 Pioneers opened the day by taking care of Luther 25-17, 25-23 and 25-17. Grinnell put together an impressive .253 hitting efficiency with Millie Leonard '27 pounding down 12 kills and Kylie Snell '26 adding six to go along with four blocks.

Marlowe Hurst '28 and Kylie-Ann Smith '27 each had 13 assists, while Keira Sullivan '27 tallied three aces. On the digs front, Sullivan had 16 and Gracie Lim '28 added 11.

Grinnell shot out to a 6-1 lead in the opening set and coasted from there. However, Luther came back with a vengeance to grab an 8-0 lead immediately in the second set and was later ahead 18-9 and 21-15. Then it was the Pioneers' turn as Leonard posted three kills during a five-point run that made it 21-20. After Luther had gone ahead 23-22, Leonard recorded two kills in a row and teamed with Kinsey Carrigan '29 for a block to help Grinnell eke out the victory.

That momentum carried over to the third set as Grinnell went on to secure the sweep.

The Pioneers followed with a 25-12, 25-23, 25-18 victory over Faith. Leonard recorded 11 kills and hit .526, while Nicole Mlynski '26 added eight kills. Smith contributed 28 assists, three aces and 17 digs.

Grinnell easily won the first set before emerging in nail-biting fashion in the second. Leading just 22-21, a service error and attack error by Faith put the Pioneers ahead 24-21. After the Eagles scored twice, Hayley Taka '26 finished it off for Grinnell with a kill.

Grinnell kept it going after that, taking the third set for the sweep.

The Pioneers have a critical Midwest Conference match Tuesday at Illinois College. The first serve in Jacksonville, Ill., is slated for 6 p.m.
