Grinnell men's soccer team knocks off Knox to secure another MWC Tourney berth

GALESBURG, Ill. - Grinnell College's men's soccer team has been a model of consistency in the Midwest Conference over the years, and that trend has continued in 2025.

The Pioneers punched their ticket to the MWC Tournament for the fifth year in a row Saturday afternoon, scoring in the second half for a 1-0 victory at Knox College.

Grinnell finished in a second-place tie with Beloit College in the league standings with a 4-2-2 mark while improving to 5-7-5 overall. The Pioneers and Beloit will meet in the opening round of the league tournament Friday at Lake Forest College. Kickoff is 2 p.m. at Farwell Field.

Oliver Northing '26 broke a scoreless tie with the only goal of the game in the 59th minute. It was his team-high sixth of the season and 21st of his career. On the play, Demi Oni '27 chased down the ball on the right side of the box and fired a cross into Northing in front of the net. Northing outleaped his opponent and delivered a header into the bottom left side of the goal.

Jack Alexander '29 worked the entire match in goal for Grinnell, recording two saves. It was his third shutout of the season.

Grinnell outshot Knox 11-7 and had four corners while holding the Prairie Fire to none. Jack Pennachio '28, Samuel Gojjam '27, Jaxon Willoughby '26 and Oni all had two shots, while Northing, Ian O'Loughlin '28 and Zander Salva '29 had one apiece.

Knox finished its season at 3-4-1 in the league and 7-5-4 overall.

"I am immensely proud of the guys," said Grinnell coach Brian Jaworski. "This season has been a pretty wicked storm, and there've been a lot of moments where they (as individuals and as a team) could have stopped working hard or stopped believing that we could achieve the team's goals.

"Today was our day," he added. "It was a masterpiece of next-guy up, execution of the game plan and relentless determination and pressure to put away a good Knox team. This team has accomplished several of the goals they committed to achieving and there's one more big one on our list."
