Grinnell College volleyball team has tough outing against Monmouth

GRINNELL, Iowa - One day after posting an impressive sweep of Knox College, the pendulum swung the other way for the Grinnell College volleyball team.

Monmouth College swept the Pioneers Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium, winning by consecutive scores of 25-22.

The Pioneers, who recorded their second-best hitting percentage in program history Friday, were limited to a .169 efficiency by the Fighting Scots.

Millie Leonard '27 and Leticia Machado '29 each had 11 kills for GC, with Leonard tallying a strong efficiency of .409. Kylie-Ann Smith '27 led the team in assists with 16, Marlowe Hurst '28 added 11 and Emilee Appel '29 served up three of the team's four aces.

Kylie Snell '26 led Grinnell (12-13, 5-2 Midwest Conference) in blocks with four and also had 10 digs. Smith and Gracie Lim '28 posted 12 digs apiece.

The first set was tight the entire way, with Grinnell pulling within 23-22 on Hayley Taka's kill. However, the Fighting Scots scored two in a row for the win. The visitors picked up where they left off in the second set and never trailed in going ahead 2-0 in sets.

The third set was a different story as Grinnell rallied from a two-point deficit with an eight-point run. Appel served two aces and Machado and Leonard each had two kills as the Pioneers opened up a 20-14 lead.

Monmouth (11-13, 5-2 MWC) answered with a six-point run to force a tie before Leonard's kill put Grinnell on top 21-20. The Fighting Scots went on to score five of the next six points to complete the sweep.

Grinnell will attempt to secure a spot in the MWC Tourney when it closes out its home slate against league leader Cornell College Wednesday. The first serve at Darby Gymnasium is set for 7 p.m.
