Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

Grinnell starts quickly before Ripon rebounds for women's basketball win

RIPON, Wis. - Grinnell College's women's basketball got out to a fast start, but a Ripon College squad that is sitting just outside the national rankings rebounded for an 81-56 victory Saturday.

Ava Wu '29 began the Pioneers' electric start with a 3-pointer and Kelsey Ericksen '26 added two free throws for a 5-0 lead. However, the Red Hawks responded with 17 consecutive points on their way to a 27-10 cushion by the end of the first period. The hosts followed with a 26-6 second-period edge for a 53-16 halftime lead.

Grinnell (4-7, 2-2 Midwest Conference) refused to fold, though, outscoring Ripon 22-15 in the third period. The Pioneers' big quarter was aided by impressive shooting after making just 25 percent in the opening half. On top of that, Grinnell's defense limited Ripon (8-2, 3-0 MWC) to just 46.2 percent shooting in the third period after the Red Hawks made 60 percent in the first two frames combined.

The Pioneers kept it up in the fourth quarter, holding an 18-13 scoring edge in the final 10 minutes of the game.

Grinnell featured a balanced scoring attack with Juniper Schwartzman '27 and Amelia Rigel '28 each scoring nine points and Nora Lynch '28 adding eight. Schwartzman and Rigel grabbed five and four rebounds, respectively, and Lynch and Reese Stephens '27 both dished out three assists.

Grinnell is off until Dec. 31 when it travels to Lincoln, Neb., to face Nebraska Wesleyan University.
