Rudenberg's thrilling comeback propels Grinnell men's tennis team to victory over Augustana

IOWA CITY, Iowa - If the Grinnell College men's tennis team continues to show the tenacity it did Saturday afternoon, the Pioneers will be in for a thrilling season.

On the brink of defeat against Augustana College, the Pioneers collected the final two singles victories to earn a 4-3 win.

Sam Rudenberg '25 and Wilder Cooke '25 earned Grinnell's lone doubles victory, a 6-4 decision at the second spot. In singles, Lucas Willett '26 posted a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 2 and Aiden Klass '25 won 6-3, 7-6 at No. 3. Later, with Grinnell trailing 3-2, Henry Park '28 swept his foe at No. 6 singles 6-4, 6-2.

That set up Rudenberg's heroics in the deciding No. 5 singles match. He won the first set 6-4, but lost the second 6-4. Down 5-3 in the third set and trailing 40-0, Rudenberg shut down four match points to win the game. He held serve to force the tiebreaker at 6-5, and went on to win that tie-breaker 7-2 to secure the Pioneers' victory.

The 36th-ranked Pioneers, who are 1-0, play their home opener Sunday when NCAA Division II Quincy University visits the Bear Center Field House for a noon matchup. Augustana fell to 1-1.
