Grinnell women put up another stellar performance on 2nd day of MWC Championships

MWC, meet and school records tumble down

Friday's Results

GRINNELL, Iowa - Three sets of school, meet and overall Midwest Conference records came tumbling down as the Grinnell College women's swimming and diving team dominated at the MWC Championships Friday at Russell K. Osgood Pool.

Grinnell set marks in all three categories in a pair of relays, the 200-yard freestyle and 400 medley, and Camryn Gonzales '25 did the same in the 50 freestyle.

That helped Grinnell to a team score of 277 points and the lead in the meet, 38 points ahead of runner-up St. Norbert College.

The 200 free relay team of Gonzales, Sophia Carroll '25, Sophie Juethner '26 and Ciara Vogler '26 won in 1 minute, 35.60 seconds to top the league overall and meet marks of 1:36.38, set in 2020 by Lake Forest. That also bettered the school record of 1:36.72, set last season, and was a mere half-second off an NCAA "B" cut.

The 400 medley unit of Sarah Lopez '26, Bella Takata '28, Gonzales and Carroll won in 3:52.24 to beat the MWC, meet and school marks of 3:53.47 set a decade ago.

Gonzales won the 50 freestyle in 23.73 to break Madeline Peak's MWC, meet and school records of 24.04 set in 2019. She missed an NCAA "B" cut by .16 of a second. Grinnell's other victory came from Carroll in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:09.71.

Carroll and Gonzales each now have 13 MWC titles in their careers, Vogler gained her ninth and Lopez collected her seventh.

Samantha Cook '27 was second in the 500 freestyle in 5:12.37, which ranks fifth in program history. The Pioneers got a fifth-place finish from Juethner in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.44, seventh all-time at GC.

Placing sixth were Maya Comer '28 in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:15.63, ninth all-time, and Vogler in the 50 freestyle with a clocking of 24.49. Josephine Hopkins '28 placed seventh in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:20.27, which is 18th all-time at GC, and Molly Ryan '27 took seventh in the 200 individual medley in 2:14.75. Aliya Swearngin '25 placed eighth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.72, which ranks 13th.

Also for Grinnell, Megan Gawlick '28 swam the 15th-fastest 500 freestyle time at GC with a clocking of 5:18.09 in the consolation event. Takata swam 2:14.42 in the 200 individual medley consolation, 19th all-time.

The meet continues at 10 a.m. Saturday.
