Grinnell blasts NCAA D-II Minnesota-Duluth in huge spring break win

ORLANDO, Fla. - Grinnell College's women's tennis team may have been stepping up to play an NCAA Division II squad, but the Pioneers weren't fazed in the least as they blasted the University of Minnesota Duluth 6-1 Thursday.

The Pioneers claimed the singles point with victories at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots with the duos of Isa Voinescu '26-Anika Sheth '26 (6-0) and Sydney Marin '25-Keira Healy '28 (6-3).

Grinnell kept it up in singles play with wins in five of the six slots. Voinescu rallied for a 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 1-0 (11-9) marathon victory at No. 1 and Marin earned a 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 3. Kayla Surpless '28 topped her foe at No. 4 by a 6-4, 6-3 score, Healy outlasted her opponent 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) at No. 5 and Kalea Martin '25 posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 6.

Grinnell, ranked 27th nationally, lost a 7-0 decision to No. 26 Swarthmore after the UM-Duluth contest.

During the day, Perrin upped her school record for career doubles victories to 76. Kalra jumped to 10th for career singles wins with 61 and Perrin is 11th with 53.

Grinnell (12-6) hosts Coe College at 11 a.m. March 30 at 10th Avenue Courts. The contest will serve as Senior Day.
