GC women's tennis team opens spring break trip with tough test

Pioneers lose to 13th-ranked Carnegie Mellon

ORLANDO, Fla. - Grinnell College's women's tennis team opened its spring break trip to Florida Sunday morning with its toughest test to date of the 2024-25 campaign.

The Pioneers, ranked 27th nationally, lost a 7-0 decision to No. 13 and unbeaten Carnegie Mellon University at the USTA Courts. It was the first-ever meeting between the programs.

Despite the loss, the Pioneers posted some impressive performances. At No. 2 singles, Paige Sargent '27 overcame a 6-0 loss in the first set to take four games in the second. At No. 1 singles, Pari Chavan '27 played the nation's 24th-ranked player to 6-3 in the first set. Anika Sheth '26 took three games from her foe in the opening set at No. 5 singles, and Utsah Kalra '24 grabbed two games from the nation's 10th-ranked player at No. 4 singles.

Grinnell, 11-3 on the season, plays a pair of matches Monday. The Pioneers face Haverford College at 8 a.m. local time and meet 17th-ranked Christopher Newport University at 11:30 a.m.
