Grinnell men's tennis team makes history with 21st consecutive Midwest Conference title

Pioneers tie record for most league titles in a row regardless of sport

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's men's tennis team made history Saturday after blanking both Lawrence University and Ripon College by 7-0 scores at 10th Avenue Courts.

The Pioneers sewed up their 21st Midwest Conference title in a row with the wins, tying the record for most consecutive league titles by any team in any sport. Monmouth College's men's track and field team won 21 straight indoor titles from 2000 to 2020.

Additionally, Grinnell stretched its winning streak against league foes to 194 dating back to 2002-03. The Pioneers have shut out 37 of their last 44 league foes and own 27 MWC titles overall.

Grinnell opened the day by shutting down Lawrence University. The Pioneers won the doubles point by sweeping all three matches by 6-1 scores from the duos of Aman Kothari '28-Alex Doane '28, Henry Park '28-Caden Branum '28 and Keegan McLaughlin '27-Anshul Satav '27.

Singles winners were Park (6-1, 6-0), Doane (6-1, 6-0), Kothari (6-1, 6-3), Satav (6-0, 6-0), Branum (6-1, 6-2) and Juan Diego Carpio '28 (6-2, 6-0).

The Pioneers won six of the nine matches against Ripon by shutout, including 6-0 decisions in doubles by the teams of Doane-Kothari, Branum-Park and Kaan Mac Donald '28-McLaughlin.

In singles, winning 6-0, 6-0 were McLaughlin at No. 4, Carpio at No. 5 and William Chhim '25 at No. 6. Doane won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1, Satav was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 2 and Kothari posted a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 3.

Also Saturday, Grinnell had another team that played at 32nd-ranked Washington University in St. Louis. WashU posted a 5-0 victory over the 60th-ranked Pioneers.

Wilder Cooke '25 and Sam Rudenberg '25 earned a 7-6 victory at No. 2 doubles, and Cooke led the nation's 33rd-ranked player 7-6, 1-0 before the match was halted.

Grinnell will face Illinois College in the MWC Men's Team Tournament Friday at Madison, Wis.
