GC women's tennis team disposes of UW-Whitewater in opening round of NCAA Regional

Pioneers have won 6 consecutive NCAA Tourney openers

FOREST PARK, Mo. - Just a bit over a month ago, the Grinnell College women's tennis team eked out a 4-3 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The Pioneers made sure this time around wasn't a nail-biter. The Pioneers claimed the doubles point to start things off and then took control of singles to dispose of the Warhawks 4-1 in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Friday morning at Dwight Davis Tennis Center.

Grinnell has won six consecutive NCAA Tourney openers and eight in program history. The Pioneers, who are ranked 41st nationally and ninth in the region, improved to 19-9 with the victory. That figure ranks fifth in program history.

Grinnell was in command from the get-go, winning 6-3 at No. 2 doubles with the duo of Erin Jarvis '25 and Lily Perrin '25 and 6-2 at the third spot with Anika Sheth '26 and Pari Chavan '27. Additionally, Paige Sargent '27 and Isa Voinescu '26 led the region's ninth-ranked doubles team 4-3 at the top spot before the match was stopped.

The Pioneers finished things off in singles, as Utsah Kalra '25 won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3, Jarvis posted a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 5 and Voinescu won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6.

Kalra moved her career victory total to 99 and Perrin claimed her 139th overall career win, just four shy of the school record. Jarvis is tied for fifth in career doubles wins with 64 and Perrin is tied for ninth in single-season doubles wins with 22.

Grinnell will face the ninth-ranked regional host, Washington University, at 10 a.m. Saturday. UW-Whitewater, ranked 56th nationally, finished its season with a 14-9 mark.
