Grinnell netters enjoy perfect start at own tournament

GRINNELL, Iowa - It was a perfect night, both match-wise and set-wise, for the Grinnell College volleyball team Friday in Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers didn't drop a set as they swept both Bethany Lutheran College and Knox College by 3-0 scores on the opening day of the Grinnell College Tournament. In the latter victory, Grinnell served up 17 aces which rank ninth in program history and second-best for a three-set contest.

The Pioneers began the tourney with a 27-25, 25-19, 25-20 victory over Bethany Lutheran. Grinnell posted a .324 hitting percentage, with Millie Leonad '27 blasting away with eight kills and a .538 efficiency. Hayley Taka '26, Nicole Mlynski '26 and Keira Sullivan '27 each had six kills, while Kylie-Ann Smith '27 tallied 13 assists.

Marlowe Hurst '28 served up five of the Pioneers' 12 aces and Gracie Lim '28 had eight digs.

Grinnell trailed the first set 18-9 before coming back with a flurry, using a five-point service run by Hurst to pull within 20-19. It was tight the rest of the way, with Grinnell rallying from a 25-24 gap with kills by Sullivan and Leonard and attack error by the visitors to provide the winning margin.

The Pioneers rode that momentum the rest of the way, using a four-point run on Lim's serve to finish off the second set and shooting out to a 5-1 lead in the third en route to victory.

Grinnell continued its hot hitting in a 25-12, 25-10, 25-10 victory over Knox. The Pioneers had a .392 efficiency with Taka pounding down 12 kills and hitting .706, the seventh-best efficiency in program history and best since 2022. Leticia Machado '29 added eight kills and Snell, Mlynski and Kinsey Carrigan '29 tallied six. Snell hit .462 and Carrigan hit .455.

Smith and Hurst dished out 18 and 11 assists, respectively, while Hurst also served four aces. Lim led the digs front with nine.

Grinnell was never challenged in any of the sets while improving to 2-0 on the season. The Pioneers take on the University of Dubuque at 11 a.m. Saturday and battle Macalester College at 3 p.m. to finish off the two-day tourney.
