Grinnell netters drop five-set nail-biter against Buena Vista

GRINNELL, Iowa - In a nerve-racking two-plus hour marathon, Grinnell College's volleyball team posted a valiant comeback before falling short Wednesday night at Darby Gymnasium.

Buena Vista University bounced back from an opening-set loss to outlast the Pioneers 21-25, 25-15, 25-23, 23-25, 15-9 in non-conference play.

The Pioneers rallied from deficits of 19-13 and 23-20 in the fourth set to win and built leads of 4-2 and 5-3 in the fifth set before the Beavers came back to win.

Keira Sullivan '27, Millie Leonard '27 and Leticia Machado '29 paced Grinnell's balanced attack effort with 13, 12 and nine kills, respectively. Kylie-Ann Smith '27 added 34 assists and Machado served up three aces.

Leonard and Smith had three blocks each and Gracie Lim '28 led the digs chart with 25. Also in double-digit digs were Smith with 15 and Sullivan and Gabby Choy '26 with 12 each.

Grinnell (3-6) trailed the opening set 20-19 before a Beaver service error and kills by Kylie Snell '26 and Sullivan made it a 22-20 Pioneer lead. After Buena Vista (3-5) scored, kills by Leonard and Sullivan plus a Beaver hitting error gave Grinnell the victory.

Buena Vista not only won the next two sets, but also took a sizable lead in the fourth. With her team trailing 19-13, Machado took control at the service line with a big run. She served an ace and Sullivan and Leonard each had two kills as Grinnell went ahead 20-19.

Buena Vista followed with a four-point spurt, but Grinnell got back into contention with a kill by Leonard. Leonard served the final four points, with Sullivan finishing off two with kills and Snell ending the set with another kill.

Grinnell twice built two-point leads in the fifth set, the last at 5-3 on a Beaver service error. However, the visitors went on a four-point run and never trailed after that. Grinnell did get as close as 8-7 on Machado's kill, but that momentum was halted with a four-point Beaver run.

The Pioneers travel to Rock Island, Ill., on Saturday for the Augustana College Invitational. They will play Milwaukee School of Engineering and Bethel University.
