Large home crowd helps propel Pioneer women's soccer team to third consecutive shutout victory

GRINNELL, Iowa - Playing in front of its largest home crowd of the season, the Grinnell College women's soccer team delivered Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers, who were 0-3-1 in their first four matches of the season, reeled off their third victory in a row with a 1-0 decision over Westminster College at Springer Field.

Teya Lochridge '29 scored the lone goal of the contest in the 66th minute as a crowd of 150-plus - which included fans on hand for Family Weekend as well as the Japanese Cultural Association-Student Athlete Advisory Committee (JCA x SAAC) Match Day - cheered the home team to victory.

Grinnell posted its third consecutive shutout - all the victories in the current streak have been by 1-0 margins - and its fourth shutout of the season.

Peyton Dixon '27 had her third shutout of the year and 21st overall at the keeper spot, saving two shots in the process.

Lochridge scored the first goal of her collegiate career on an assist by Keiko Smith '26, her first this season and second in her career. On the play, Smith gained possession of a batted-around ball just outside of the box. She flipped it to Lochridge, who was about 5 yards beyond the box on the left side. Lochridge lofted a perfectly-placed shot over the keeper's hands that bounced off the crossbar and directly down into the goal.

Grinnell (3-3-1) outshot Westminster (2-4) 15-3, including a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. Lochridge had six of Grinnell's shots, Campbell Swaim '28 added three and Rama Joshi '27 took two. Credited with one shot each were Zoe Kunzman '28, Smith, Addison Thornberg '29 and Ramona Delborne '26.

The Pioneers hit the road Tuesday to finish up their non-conference slate with a contest at Central College. Kickoff is 4:30 p.m.
