Grinnell netters drop pair of hard-fought matches at Augie Invite

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Grinnell College's volleyball squad faced a pair of stiff tests Friday on the opening day of the Augsburg University Augie Invite, dropping matches to Gustavus Adolphus College and Lakeland University.

Grinnell opened with Gustavus, a squad receiving votes for the national rankings. The Gusties came away with a 25-10, 25-23 and 25-19 decision.

Leticia Machado '29 and Keira Sullivan '27 had seven and six kills, respectively, for Grinnell. Marlowe Hurst '28 added 11 assists and Kylie-Ann Smith '27 dished out nine. Hurst also served two aces and Sullivan led the team in digs with nine.

The Pioneers shook that result off in a hurry, rolling over Lakeland 25-19 in the opening set of the next match. However, the Muskies rallied for victories of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-23 for the 3-1 win.

Grinnell served up nine aces in the contest, with Gracie Lim '28 getting four of those and Smith and Emilee Appel '29 adding two apiece. Hayley Taka '26 and Millie Leonard '27 had big efforts at the net with 13 kills, while Taka hit .324 and Leonard coming in at .321. Machado was also in double-digit kills with 12.

Smith tallied 40 assists and 11 digs, while Lim came up with 15 digs.

The first set was tight most of the way, with the Pioneers leading just 22-19 before kills from Kylie Snell '26 and Leonard followed by Lim's ace gave Grinnell the victory.

After losing the next two sets, the Pioneers looked poised to win the fourth when they opened up a 19-14 lead with the aid of a five-point scoring run. Appel served four of those points and Taka had two kills.

However, Lakeland gradually inched back and eventually secured the win.

Grinnell, 3-3 on the season, finishes the tourney Saturday with a 10 a.m. match against the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and 3 p.m. contest against Augsburg.
