Pioneers shoot out to early lead at Grinnell Invite

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's swimming and diving team collected four victories on the opening day of the Grinnell Invite Friday.


That helped the Pioneers take the team lead in the 11-squad event with 441.5 points, well ahead of runner-up Nebraska Wesleyan University's total of 387.

Sarah Lopez '26 was a double champ for the Pioneers at Russell K. Osgood Pool, winning the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 11.76 seconds and 200 butterfly in 2:10.63.

Nina Lyons '29 won the 500 freestyle in 5:14.97 with the eighth-best time in program history, while Alex Kruse '29 was first in 1-meter diving with a score of 381.75.

Grinnell was second in all three relays contested Friday. Those runners-up teams were Ciara Vogler '26, Tory Morse '29, Sophie Juethner '26 and Samantha Cook '27 in the 200 freestyle (1:39.53), Vogler, Zeb O'Hara '28, Josephine Hopkins '28 and Lyons in the 800 freestyle (8:13.99) and Simone Bennett '29, Joely Kam '28, Lopez and Morse in the 400 medley (4:01.74).

Other runners-up were Bennett in the 100 backstroke (58.59), Kam in the 200 breaststroke (2:28.31) and Maya Comer '28 in the 500 freestyle (5:17.19). Bennett's time ranks fourth in program history.

Kam was fourth in the 200 individual medley in 2:17.74, the same placing as Maria Restrepo '29 in the 200 butterfly (2:16.67). Restrepo's time ranks 19th in program history.

Placing fifth were Molly Ryan '27 in the 100 backstroke (1:00.97), Morse in the 100 individual medley (1:03.93) and Jane Markovitz '26 in 1-meter diving (308.85 points).

Sixth place went to Ryan in the 200 individual medley (2:18.56), Cook in the 100 freestyle (55.24), Natasha Zettler '27 in the 200 butterfly (2:20.34) and Bella Nesbeth '26 in 1-meter diving (288.65 points).

Cook was seventh in the 500 freestyle in 5:21.54, the same placing as Evelyn Deutsch '29 in 1-meter diving (278.90 points) and Morse in the 100 freestyle (55.28). Placing eighth were Greta Dunn '26 in the 100 backstroke (1:02.73), Sofia Bedoya-Correa '29 in the 200 butterfly (2:23.93) and O'Hara in the 500 freestyle (5:23.28).

The meet concludes Saturday.
