Grinnell volleyball team posts 3rd consecutive sweep while disposing of Luther

Pioneers improve to 4-1 in league play

DECORAH, Iowa - The sweep streak continued for the Grinnell College volleyball team Friday night as the Pioneers improved to 4-1 in the Midwest Conference.

The Pioneers posted their third consecutive sweep, disposing of Luther College by scores of 25-16, 25-23 and 25-23. Grinnell, 8-9 overall, hit at a .302 clip for the match which ranks third-best for the team this season.

Grinnell bolted out to a fast start in the match, taking an 11-4 lead with the aid of two kills each from Keira Sullivan '27 and Millie Leonard '27. The Pioneers maintained their edge the entire set, finishing it off with a kill by Leonard.

The second set was tight the entire way, with the Pioneers using a key 4-0 run to turn a one-point lead into a 23-19 edge. Leonard and Sullivan had kills in that span and Sophia Ochoa '30 added an ace. Luther crept back, coming within 24-23 before a service error by the Norse provided the visitors with their winning point.

Two kills and a block from Leonard, as well as a kill by Leticia Machado '29, propelled Grinnell to a 4-0 lead in the third set. But the Norse rallied, twice going ahead by two points. Grinnell refused to fold, though, and forced ties late at 19, 20 and 21. Luther scored the next point, but Machado, Ochoa and Leonard had back-to-back-to-back kills to put the Pioneers ahead 24-22. After a service error by the Pioneers, Sullivan finished the match with a kill as the Norse fell to 1-3 in the MWC and 5-16 overall.

Three Pioneers posted double-digit kills, led by Leonard with 13 while hitting .357. Machado added 11 kills and Sullivan had 10 to go along with a .529 hitting efficiency. Kylie-Ann Smith '27 contributed 32 assists, while Ochoa tallied three aces and Leonard and Emilee Appel '29 served two each.

The digs category was balanced as Gracie Lim '28 had 12 and Smith and Sullivan added 10 apiece.

Grinnell has a big league test Saturday at Cornell College, the defending MWC champ. The first serve is slated for 1 p.m.
