Pioneer men's soccer team punches ticket to MWC Tourney with 5-0 shutout against Lawrence

GC has made league tourney 6 years in a row

GRINNELL, Iowa - Postseason play and the Grinnell College men's soccer team have been synonymous over the years.

That trend continued Saturday as the Pioneers punched their ticket to the Midwest Conference Tournament for the sixth season in a row with a 5-0 shutout of Lawrence University at Springer Field.

Grinnell improved to 5-2 in league play and 11-2-1 overall, its highest victory total since 2021. The Pioneers have beaten Lawrence six times in a row dating back to 2021 and their five-goal margin of victory matches the highest ever against the Vikings, tying the 5-0 win in 2023.

The Pioneers, who have won three in a row, posted their seventh shutout of the season. Grinnell's offense went wild, holding a 19-8 edge in shots including 12-3 in shots on goal. The Pioneers also won the corner kicks battle 8-5.

Grinnell showed it meant business from the start, outshooting Lawrence 11-3 in the first half while grabbing a 3-0 halftime lead. Jack Pennachio '28 opened the scoring in the 19th minute when he found the back of the net on Jake Lu's '30 assist. It was Pennachio's fourth goal of the year and sixth in his career.

Three minutes later, Samuel Gojjam '27 recorded his team-high ninth goal on Oliver Klemm's '29 assist. Gojjam has scored 24 times in his career, 10th all-time at GC.

In the 39th minute, Luke Akosa '29 had a highlight-reel goal which was also the first score of his collegiate career. Zander Salva '29 had the assist.

Klemm scored in the 59th minute and Kanata Mizutani '28 finished off the scoring in the 76th minute. Klemm, whose goal was assisted by Gojjam, has four goals this season and Mizutani three.

Jack Alexander '29 had three saves in 66 minutes for Grinnell before giving way to Braydon Depew '29. Alexander now has 15 victories in his career, eighth in program history.

Gojjam now ranks fifth in program history with 72 games played and Demi Oni '27 is eighth with 71.

Klemm had four shots for Grinnell, Lu and Daniel Katsanovich '30 added three each and Pennachio, Gojjam and Akosa managed two apiece.

With the loss, Lawrence fell to 3-4 in the MWC and 6-4-2 overall.
