Grinnell gives Lawrence a run for its money before falling in 4 sets

APPLETON, Wis. - Grinnell College gave one of the Midwest Conference preseason title contenders a run for its money Friday night before losing in four sets.

The Pioneers split the first two sets with Lawrence University and led the third set by five points before the Vikings rallied to win. Lawrence finished things off in the fourth set to secure the 25-23, 15-25, 25-21, 25-13 win in the MWC opener for both teams.

Three Grinnell players had nine kills apiece - Millie Leonard '27, Keira Sullivan '27 and Leticia Machado '29. Mia Meert '30 added seven kills while hitting at an impressive .357 clip.

Kylie-Ann Smith '27 had 34 assists for the Pioneers, who are 4-9 overall, and Emilee Appel '29 served five aces with Leonard adding three. In the digs department, Sullivan posted 17 and Leonard had 10.

The first set was close throughout, with Grinnell closing within 24-23 on a Lawrence service error before the 9-6 Vikings won on a Pioneer attack error.

Grinnell led the second set 13-10 before going on a 7-2 run to open things up. Machado had a kill during the spurt that also included several Lawrence attack errors. The Pioneers closed things out with the aid of kills by Meert, Charlotte Sigler '30, Sulllivan and Machado as well as a service ace by Leonard.

Leonard and Appel had two service aces apiece during an early third-set run that saw Grinnell go ahead 13-8. The Pioneers kept command after that, building a 17-12 lead on an ace serve by Marlowe Hurst '28. However, Lawrence rallied to tie the match, pull away and eventually secure the win.

The hosts played off that momentum to claim the fourth set and match victory.

Grinnell plays at Ripon College Saturday. The first serve is 1 p.m.
