Grinnell volleyball team starts quickly, but falls in 4 at Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. - The night began on the right note for the Grinnell College volleyball team with a convincing victory in the first set, but Monmouth College rebounded on its home court to win the final three for a 3-1 decision Tuesday night.

Set scores, in favor of the hosts, were 18-25, 25-14, 25-23 and 25-19.

The first set was tied at 16-all before the Pioneers caught fire, scoring nine of the next 11 points. Keira Sullivan '27 pounded down consecutive kills for an 18-16 edge before the Fighting Scots got a point.

Grinnell (4-3 Midwest Conference, 8-11 overall) rebounded by getting a point on a Monmouth error, Sullivan served up an ace and Leticia Machado '29 had a kill before another Fighting Scot error made it 22-17. After the Fighting Scots scored, a service error by the hosts, kill from Millie Leonard '27 and attack error on Monmouth gave the Pioneers the victory.

Monmouth (4-3 MWC, 7-13 overall) won the second set and opened a 16-13 lead in the third before Grinnell rallied, as Machado and Leonard swatted kills, Gracie Lim '28 had a service ace and Monmouth an error to put the Pioneers ahead 17-16.

After Monmouth tied things up, the Pioneers followed with three straight points on a kill by Machado, ace by Marlowe Hurst '28 and attack error by the hosts for a 20-17 edge. But a late surge by the Fighting Scots gave them the two-point victory.

Monmouth built a 16-11 lead in the fourth set before Grinnell made a final run, as a few errors by the hosts and kills from Charlotte Sigler '30 and Sullivan brought the visitors within 16-15. However, the Fighting Scots withstood the rally and went on to take the set.

Leonard had 18 kills and Machado 14 for the Pioneers. Kylie-Ann Smith '27 added 29 assists and Lim served two aces to go along with 26 digs. Smith contributed 16 digs and Leonard had 13.

Leonard inched closer to the 1,000-kill milestone for her career, moving into ninth all-time at GC with 995.

Grinnell has a week off before traveling to Indianola next Tuesday to face Simpson College. The first serve is slated for 7 p.m.
