Grinnell takes Simpson to the limit before falling in 5 sets

Pioneers nearly beat team that swept them in September

INDIANOLA, Iowa - What a difference a few months can make.

After getting swept by Simpson College the first weekend of September, Grinnell College's volleyball team battled the Storm to five sets Tuesday night in a marathon that lasted nearly two hours.

But by the end, the American Rivers Conference-leading Storm escaped with a 17-25, 25-14, 25-11, 16-25, 15-7 victory.

Grinnell (8-12) led the opening set 12-11 before going on a 10-3 run to open things up. Keira Sullivan '27 had a kill and ace in that span, Molly Kuhn '29 and Kinsey Carrigan '29 each had kills and Paige Lundgren '30 an ace. The Pioneers never let Simpson within striking range the rest of the set.

After the Storm took the next two sets, the Pioneers rebounded in the fourth stanza. Leading 11-10, Grinnell went on a 5-1 run for a 16-11 lead. Ella Tulimieri '30 had three kills in that span and Kuhn an ace.

It was later a 19-14 Pioneer lead when a 6-2 run closed out the set. Grinnell spread the wealth in the spurt, getting two kills by Charlotte Sigler '30 and one each by Carrigan and Mia Meert '30.

Simpson (16-6) jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the fifth set and later led 12-3. Grinnell had a last-ditch effort, scoring four points in a row with the aid of Carrigan's ace, before Simpson closed out the victory.

Leticia Machado '29 had 11 kills to lead the Pioneers' hitting attack and Lundgren and Kylie-Ann Smith '30 added 14 and 12 assists, respectively. Carrigan and Sullivan tallied two aces apiece and coming up with double-digit digs were Gracie Lim '28 (24), Sullivan (16) and Kuhn (11).

Smith moved her career assist total to 1,407 to become just the ninth player in program history to eclipse the 1,400-mark. Additionally, Sullivan boosted her career point total to 850.0 to move into the No. 15 slot on the all-time program list.

The Pioneers close out their Midwest Conference slate this weekend with home matches against Beloit College at 7 p.m. Friday and Lake Forest College at 1 p.m. Saturday. Senior Day festivities will be held prior to the Lake Forest contest.
