Leonard reaches 1,000-kill milestone as Pioneer volleyball team sweeps Beloit

Grinnell hits .409 for the match, 9th-best mark in program history

GRINNELL, Iowa - Millie Leonard '27 reached the 1,000-kill milestone for her career as the Grinnell College volleyball team swept past Beloit College in three sets Friday night.

The 25-17, 25-17, 25-15 victory stretched the Pioneers' winning streak against Beloit to eight matches dating back to 2018. Additionally, Grinnell has won 17 consecutive sets against the Bucs.

Leonard reached her 1,000th career kill early in the second set at Darby Gymnasium, becoming just the ninth Grinnell player to achieve the feat. She also boosted her career points total to 1156.5, which ranks 10th in GC history.

The Pioneers hit a blistering .409 for the match, the ninth-best figure in program history and best since a victory over Knox College last year.

Keira Sullivan '27 was dominant at the net, hitting .522 with 13 kills on 23 swings with just one error. Leticia Machado '29 was also in double digits for kills with 10. Kinsey Carrigan '29 added a .771 hitting efficiency and Leonard came in at .714.

Kylie-Ann Smith '27 and Paige Lundgren '30 had 18 and 13 assists, respectively, and Emilee Appel '29 served up five aces. Gracie Lim '28 posted 13 digs.

In the opening set, Grinnell used a 6-1 run to turn a two-point lead into a commanding 22-15 cushion. Appel had two aces in that span, Molly Kuhn '29 added another and kills came from Machado, Mia Meert '30 and Sullivan.

Grinnell (5-3 Midwest Conference, 9-12 overall) cruised to the set victory and used that momentum to score eight of the first nine points of the second set. Smith and Sullivan each had aces in that run, while Sullivan added three kills, Carrigan a pair and Leonard one as Grinnell won easily.

Beloit (1-7 MWC, 6-14 overall) was within 9-8 early in the third set, but the hosts responded with an 8-2 run. Appel served two aces in that span, Meert added two kills and Charlotte Sigler '30 and Sullivan each contributed one kill as the Pioneers finished off the sweep.

The Pioneers have a huge test at Saturday afternoon's Senior Day test against Lake Forest College. With a victory, Grinnell will earn hosting rights for a MWC Tournament opening-round match.

The first serve against the Foresters is set for 1 p.m.
