Pioneers celebrate Gojjam's school record, then cruise past Cornell 3-0

Grinnell earns 3rd seed in MWC Tourney

GRINNELL, Iowa - Inspired by senior captain Samuel Gojjam '27 breaking the school record for games played in a career, Grinnell College's men's soccer team blew past Cornell College 3-0 Saturday at Springer Field.

Before the game, Gojjam was honored for playing his 75th career contest to break the previous mark of 74 which he shared with two others.

The Pioneers upped their season mark to 12-4-1 overall, their highest win total since 2008, and 6-3 in the Midwest Conference. That marks the highest number of league wins for Grinnell since 2021.

Grinnell secured the No. 3 seed in the MWC Tourney and will host a quarterfinal match next week against Knox College. The time is to be determined.

Grinnell erupted for two goals in the first 21 minutes to secure a 2-0 halftime lead, and added an insurance goal in the 66th minute.

Gojjam scored his team-high 10th goal just 12 minutes in, with Ian O'Loughlin '28 and Jake Lu '30 providing the assists. It was Gojjam's 25th career goal. Nine minutes later, Lu found the back of the net on a hard line drive shot with Beacan Mottl '28 getting the assist.

Lu added his sixth goal of the season in the second half, with Zander Salva '29 and Gavin Egeland '30 getting the assists.

Jack Alexander '29 and Braydon Depew '30 shared keeper duties for Grinnell, with Alexander working the first 76 minutes and Depew the rest of the way. Depew made three saves.

Grinnell outshot the visitors 15-7 and held an 11-1 edge in the corner kicks department. Oliver Klemm '29 had five shots for Grinnell, Lu tallied three and getting one each were Demi Oni '27, Salva, Gojjam, O'Loughlin, Jake Brecknock '27, Egeland and Daniel Katsanovich '30.

Cornell finished its season at 2-12-3 overall and 1-6-2 overall.
