Pioneers' school-record effort gives them spot in MWC Tourney, quarterfinal hosting rights

Grinnell doesn't allow a shot in victory over Cornell

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's soccer team not only punched its ticket to the Midwest Conference Tournament with a school-record performance, but the Pioneers earned quarterfinal round hosting rights in the process.

Grinnell blanked Cornell College 4-0 in the regular-season finale Saturday afternoon at Springer Field. The win, combined with other results around the league, gave the Pioneers the fourth seed in the tourney. Grinnell will host fifth-seeded Beloit College on Tuesday at a time to be determined.

The school record would be in the category of opponent shots allowed, where the staunch Pioneer defense recorded a goose egg. In the meantime, Grinnell took 21 shots and won the corner kicks battle 9-1.

Grinnell, 4-4-1 in the league and 6-9-2 overall, erupted for two goals in less than a minute to grab a 2-0 lead, and then added two more goals to build a 4-0 halftime edge.

Peyton Dixon '27 recorded the shutout as Grinnell's keeper, her second of the season and 27th of her career. She ranks second in GC history in shutouts and third in victories with 26.

Lucy Collier '30 gave the Pioneers all the scoring they'd need in the 13th minute, her first career goal that was assisted by Hollye Anne Brinkley '29. Just 58 seconds later, Brinkley scored her second goal of the year and career on Rylee Howard's '30 assist.

In the 32nd minute, Howard scored her team-high fourth goal on an assist by Emily Roesler '28. Caroline Novak '30 finished the scoring in the 40th minute with her first career goal on an assist by Naima Axelrad '30.

Howard had six of the Pioneers' shots, Teya Lochridge '29 and June Elias '30 added three apiece and Brinkley, Novak and Kate Chung '29 had two each. Coming up with one shot each were Collier, Amelia Klein '30 and Axelrad.

Cornell finished its season at 2-15 overall and 0-9 in the MWC.
