Grinnell volleyball team sews up MWC quarterfinal hosting rights with Senior Day victory

Pioneers take care of Lake Forest in 4 sets

GRINNELL, Iowa - Senior Day proved to be a great day for the Grinnell College volleyball team Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers earned hosting rights for the Midwest Conference Tournament quarterfinals by disposing of Lake Forest College 25-21, 25-19, 22-25 and 25-15.

Coincidentally, those same two teams will meet again at 7 p.m. Nov. 10 in the quarterfinals at Darby with Grinnell being the third seed and the Foresters the sixth seed. Grinnell finished MWC play with a 6-3 mark and is 10-12 overall, while Lake Forest moved to 4-5 in the league and 11-13 in all matches.

Keira Sullivan '27 etched her name in history by serving up seven aces, the second-most in program history for a four-set match and the ninth-most overall. As a team, Grinnell notched 17 aces which rank sixth for a four-setter and 10th overall.

Besides Sullivan's big service effort, Molly Kuhn '29 added three and Millie Leonard '27 and Emilee Appel '29 had two each.

Leonard and Sullivan provided a potent one-two combo at the net, with Leonard pounding down 18 kills with a .438 efficiency and Sullivan posting 12 kills and hitting .423. Leonard moved up to eighth on Grinnell's career kills list with 1,018.

In the assists department, Kylie-Ann Smith '27 had 28 and Paige Lundgren '30 added 12. Gracie Lim '28 had 16 digs and Sullivan provided 13.

The first set was tight throughout, with Grinnell breaking away from a 21-all tie with the final four points. Sullivan and Leticia Machado '29 had kills in that run and Sullivan served two points, including the set-clincher.

Grinnell controlled the second set, though the Foresters closed within 22-19 in the late going. However, Sullivan knocked down a kill, Appel served an ace and Leonard finished things off with a kill.

After losing the third set, the teams were close in the fourth before the Pioneers opened things up with a 5-0 run. Sullivan and Leonard each had kills in that span and Sullivan added an ace. Grinnell cruised from there for the victory.

The Pioneers step out of league play Tuesday when Faith Baptist College visits Darby for a 6 p.m. match.
