Pioneer volleyball team sweeps Faith Baptist in regular-season home finale

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's volleyball team made the most of its final home match of the regular season Tuesday night, rolling past Faith Baptist Bible College in three sets at Darby Gymnasium.

Grinnell, which hit .292 while holding the Eagles to a .030 efficiency, won by scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-11 to improve to 11-12 on the season.

Leticia Machado '29 and Millie Leonard '27 were tops in hitting for Grinnell with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Leonard hit .579 for the night. Gracie Lim '28 added 12 digs, Machado had three blocks and Leonard, Sophia Ochoa '30 and Emilee Appel '29 added two aces each. Kylie-Ann Smith '27 was credited with 21 assists.

A late run in the first set lifted Grinnell to victory. Leading just 20-19, Leonard had a kill, Machado a block and Faith an attack error to push the hosts ahead by four. The teams traded points twice after that, with Machado finishing things off with a kill.

Faith, 19-7 on the season, was within 13-12 in the second set when Grinnell broke away with an 8-1 run that included aces by Ochoa and Leonard, two kills by Machado and one from Kinsey Carrigan '29. Grinnell never looked back after that and used that momentum to easily win the third set.

The Pioneers close out the regular season Saturday with matches against Augustana College and Loras College in Dubuque. Grinnell entertains Lake Forest College next Tuesday in a Midwest Conference Tournament quarterfinal.
