Balance paves the way to big day for Grinnell women at MWC Championships

GRINNELL, Iowa - Balance was the name of the game for the Grinnell College women's swimming and diving team at the 2026 Midwest Conference Championships Friday.

The Pioneers won two event titles and got runner-up finishes in the other three events on their way to maintaining the lead in the team standings at Russell K. Osgood Pool.

Grinnell has 377 points after two days of action, more than 100 in front of runner-up St. Norbert College.

Grinnell's champs were Sophie Juethner '26 in the 50-yard freestyle and Alex Kruse '29 in 3-meter diving. Juethner won the race in 24.19 seconds, which ranks fourth in GC history and gives her three MWC titles in her career. Kruse was victorious with a score of 450.00, which marked yet another NCAA regional cut.

Also in diving, Bella Nesbeth '26 placed third with a 379.70 and Jane Markovitz '26 tallied a 344.70 to finish fifth.

In the 50 free, Tory Morse '29 was fourth in 24.66, Greta Dunn '26 placed fifth in 24.72 and Ciara Vogler '26 took eighth in 24.93. Morse's time ranks 11th in GC history and Dunn's is 14th.

Maya Comer '28 was second in the 500 freestyle in 5:13.84, Nina Lyons '29 placed fourth in 5:14.97 and Zeb O'Hara '28 wound up fifth in 5:16.06. Comer's time is seventh in GC history and O'Hara's ranks 11th.

Sarah Lopez '26 was the runner-up in the 200 individual medley in 2:09.31, while Vivian Woare '28 placed fifth in 2:13.79, Regan Stambaugh '26 placed sixth in 2:14.99 and Joely Kam '28 was eighth in 2:15.55. Woare's time ranks 18th in GC history.

In the 200 freestyle relay, Juethner, Morse, Dunn and Vogler finished second in 1:37.64. That time ranks fifth in GC history.

The meet continues at 10 a.m. Saturday.
