Grinnell women continue to build lead at MWC Swimming and Diving Championships

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's swimming and diving team continued its quest toward another Midwest Conference title with a stellar performance Saturday.


The Pioneers won three of seven events contested Saturday at Russell K. Osgood Pool as they boosted their point total to 752 points, more than 200 ahead of runner-up St. Norbert College.

Simone Bennett '29 established a school and meet record in the 100-yard backstroke prelims with a time of 57.08 seconds. The previous meet mark was 57.30 by Janie Richards of St. Norbert in 2023 and old school record was 57.22 by Maria Venneri in 2016. Bennett went on to win the event with a time of 57.34 in the finals.

Alex Kruse '29 completed the MWC diving sweep, taking top honors on the 1-meter board with a score of 476.20. Grinnell also won the 400 medley relay in 3:55.03, which ranks fifth in Pioneer history. Team members were Bennett, Joely Kam '28, Sarah Lopez '26 and Tory Morse '29.

In the 400 individual medley, Vivian Woare '28 was runner-up in 4:43.94, Regan Stambaugh '26 placed third in 4:44.41 and Maya Comer '28 placed sixth in 4:49.83.

Lopez was second in the 100 butterfly in 57.71, Bennett took fourth in 58.77 and Maria Restrepo '29 was ninth in 1:01.80. Restrepo swam 1:01.38 in the prelims, which ranks 17th in GC history. Greta Dunn '26, Zeb O'Hara '28 and Nina Lyons '29 were fourth, fifth and sixth in the 200 freestyle in 1:59.25, 1:59.59 and 2:00.72, respectively.

Morse was runner-up in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.59, which ranks eighth in GC history. Kam was third in 1:07.74 and Ciara Vogler '26 placed ninth in 1:11.40. Kam's time of 1:07.36 in the prelims ranks ninth in program history.

In the 100 backstroke, Molly Ryan '27 was fifth in 59.48 and Sophie Juethner '26 took eighth in 1:01.36. Restrepo swam 1:01.49, which ranks 19th in GC history.

Jane Markovitz '26 and Bella Nesbeth '26 were fourth and fifth in 1-meter diving with scores of 369.50 and 346.30.

Lopez now has 12 MWC titles to her credit, Bennett is at three and Kruse and Morse have two apiece.

The meet continues at 9 a.m. Sunday.
