Grinnell men's tennis team sails to victory over Captains in battle of nationally-ranked squads

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - In a battle of nationally-ranked men's tennis teams, Grinnell College showed it meant business from the start.

The 38th-ranked Pioneers earned the doubles point and kept up the pressure from there, disposing of 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport University by a 5-2 score Sunday.

Lucas Willett '26 and Maxi Gutbezahl '29 were each double winners for the Pioneers. Willett teamed with Albert Bostoen '26 to win 6-3 at No. 1 doubles and posted a 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 decision at the top singles spot. He now has 118 career victories, 16th in program history.

Gutbezahl and Alex Doane '28 won 6-4 at No. 2 doubles, while Gutbezahl also won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

Garvin Murray '29 and Devansh Punjabi '29 posted victories in three-set singles matches, with Murray winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 4 and Punjabi winning 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5.

Grinnell improved to 8-3 with the victory, while the Captains dipped to 7-3. The Pioneers face Virginia Wesleyan University on Tuesday.
