FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Grinnell College fell to Kenyon College in a battle of men's tennis heavyweights Friday.
Grinnell, ranked 38
th nationally, got out to a 1-0 lead against the 13
th-raned Owls by winning the doubles point.
Maxi Gutbezahl '29 and
Alex Doane '28 posted a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 spot, while
Gervase Ngo '28 and
Garvin Murray '29 won 6-4 at No. 3.
But Kenyon rallied in singles play, winning five of six singles points. Grinnell's winner was
Devansh Punjabi '29 at No. 5 singles, where he emerged victorious by a 6-4, 7-6 margin. At No. 3 singles, Murray took his regionally-ranked foe to the limit before losing 6-3, 3-6, 3-10.
Grinnell, 9-4 on the season, closes out its spring break trip Saturday at 20
th-ranked Mary Washington.
