Pioneer softball team preps for league play with victory at Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa - With the aid of a school-record performance, Grinnell College's softball team tuned up for Midwest Conference play by toppling Buena Vista University 9-4 in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday.

Kayla O'Malley '28 tied the school record for hits in a game, going a perfect 5-of-5 at the plate. She now shares the mark held by Maddie Matsubara in 2019 and Samantha Chu in 2022.

The 5-13 Pioneers had 17 hits in the game, with Julia Marquez '29 adding three hits and Gabriella Simon '29 and Asianah Gostyla '28 getting two apiece.

Meghan Harcus '29 got the pitching win, tossing a complete game and fanning six batters. The Pioneers played errorless defense behind her.

Grinnell scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back. O'Malley hit an RBI double in the frame, while Gostyla and Marquez each had RBI singles and Kala Bisterfeldt '28 pushed across a run on a fielder's choice. The Pioneers made it 6-0 in the third on Lindsey Schultz's '27 RBI triple.

Run-scoring singles were delivered in the fifth via singles by Simon and O'Malley and Marquez plated a run with a single in the sixth.

The opener was also a slugfest, with the teams combining for 28 hits in an 8-7 Buena Vista victory. Grinnell had 13 hits with Ava Araujo '29 getting three and Simon and Schultz adding two apiece.

Grinnell jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning with the aid of Araujo's two-run homer, run-scoring singles by Schultz and Zoë Salazar '29 and RBI single from Elyse Pender '27. The 6-15 Beavers pulled within 5-3, only to see Grinnell get a solo homer from O'Malley in the fifth and a sacrifice fly by Araujo in the sixth for a 7-4 lead.

However, Buena Vista rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the victory.

Emma Trani '26 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell and struck out five.

The Pioneers have two doubleheaders at home next weekend, hosting Ripon College on Friday and Lawrence University on Saturday.
