Grinnell women splits matches against ranked teams at Midwest Invite

MADISON, Wis. - Facing plenty of tough competition in a loaded Midwest Invite field, Grinnell College's women's tennis team beat one nationally-ranked squad before losing in the semifinals to another Friday at the Nielsen Tennis Center.

Grinnell, ranked 38th nationally, opened the tournament by edging No. 28 University of Wisconsin-La Crosse 4-3.

Grinnell had to rally against UW-La Crosse after losing the doubles point. The Pioneers did win one doubles match, that being a 7-6 decision by Tan Mukherjee '26 and Eliana Martin '29 at the third slot.

In singles, Pari Chavan '27 won the most thrilling match of the contest with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 decision at the second spot. Other Grinnell's singles winners were Logan Tom '29 at No. 3 (6-1, 6-3), Marta Gonzalez '29 at No. 4 (6-1, 6-3) and Nichole Henning '26 at No. 6 (7-6, 6-1).

Grinnell followed with a 4-3 setback to 23rd-ranked Denison University in the semifinals.

The Pioneers started quickly by winning the doubles point. Highlighting doubles play was a 7-6 (7-1) decision at the No. 1 spot by Paige Sargent '27 and Isa Voinescu '26 over a regionally-ranked foe. Tom and Chavan added a 6-2 victory at the second slot.

Sargent carried over her stellar play into singles, posting a 6-4, 6-4 decision over the region's 15th-ranked player at the top spot. Anika Sheth '26 finished off the match, earning a marathon 7-5, 4-6, 12-10 victory at No. 6 singles.

The 12-5 Pioneer will play for third -place at 8 a.m. Saturday against either Gustavus Adolphus or Hope.
