Pioneer volleyball team battles hard in 3-set loss to Nebraska Wesleyan

GRINNELL, Iowa - Though the final score says the Grinnell College volleyball team got swept at home Wednesday, that doesn't indicate the great fight the Pioneers put up against Nebraska Wesleyan University in Darby Gymnasium.

After losing the first set 25-17, the Pioneers built leads of 23-17 and 24-20 in the second set before falling 26-24. Grinnell dug itself a big hole early in the third set, but posted a furious comeback that proved to be too little, too late as the Prairie Wolves finished off the sweep with a 25-21 decision.

Millie Leonard '27 posted nine kills for the Pioneers, Keira Sullivan '27 contributed seven and Leticia Machado '29 added four. In the assists department, Kylie-Ann Smith '27 distributed 14 assists. Emilee Appel '29 had an excellent night serving, racking up six aces, and also had seven digs as did Smith, Machado and Molly Kuhn '29.

Grinnell (3-7) led the first set 6-5 after Sullivan's kill, but Nebraska Wesleyan (6-4) answered with a seven-point run and never looked back on its way to the set victory.

The Pioneers trailed the second set 17-15 but then caught fire, going on an eight-point run that included two aces by Appel, a pair of kills by Sullivan, one from Leonard and another from Charlotte Sigler '30. Grinnell later led 24-20, but the Prairie Wolves scored six in a row to win.

Nebraska Wesleyan shot out to a 15-4 lead in the third set, but Grinnell refused to give in. Trailing 22-16, the Pioneers scored four in a row on three Appel ace serves and a kill by Leonard. But the Prairie Wolves held on to secure the victory.

Grinnell entertains Central College at 11 a.m. Saturday and Alverno College at 3 p.m.
