Athletic Training Room Procedures

The Athletic Training Staff are unable to address the needs of all athletes, intramural participants, club sports, members of the Bear Recreation and Athletic Center and spectators. As such, the Athletic Training staff has developed a policy to clarify the services we can provide and when these services can be provided.

Grinnell College Athletes:
All Grinnell College Student Athletes may be seen in the Athletic Training Room if they are on a current sports roster during the academic year and have turned in all the required athletics forms. Preference will always be given to in-season athletes. An in-season athlete is defined as an athlete participating within that sport’s traditional NCAA season. An out of season athlete is defined as any athlete not participating in the traditional NCAA season. This includes strength and conditioning sessions, captain’s practices and non-traditional season practices.

Bear Recreation and Athletic Center members:
All monitors in the Bear are trained in first aid and CPR. When possible and necessary the athletic training staff may be engaged to provide first aid and emergency care only. This may include activation of EMS, ice, control of bleeding and referral. Treatments like muscle stimulation, ultrasound, bracing, etc. will not be provided. If an emergency situation occurs the Bear Center EAP should be engaged.

Intramural/Club Sports participants:
Athletic Trainers work under the direction of the Team Physician who is employed specifically to care for the safety and well-being of the varsity student athletes. Athletic Trainers will only provide first aid and emergency care in the Bear when possible and necessary. If an emergency situation occurs in the Bear Center the Bear Center EAP should be engaged. If it happens outside of the Bear then 911 (7-911 from a campus phone) should be dialed. If a minor injury is sustained the participants will be referred to Student Health and Counseling Services for follow-up care or doctor referral.Â
