John Shawver, owner and operator of John Shawver Golf Instruction both at Grinnell College Golf Course and ForeSeasons practice facility in Newton, is in his 28th year competing and teaching as a professional golfer.

Shawver acquired his PGA membership in 1996 and in 2001 was named Iowa PGA Assistant Golf Pro of the Year. He qualified for the John Deere Classic, a PGA Tour event, in 2001, 2004 and 2005 and the PGA Professional National Championship in 2004 and 2007. He also won the Iowa PGA Assistants Championship at Jester Park in 2002, with scores of 66 and 62, a course record.

Shawver, who also won the Iowa PGA Senior Championship in 2018, began his professional career in California  and has also worked in Florida and 11 years at Newton Country Club. He coached PCM High School’s golf team in 2014, and the squad went on to place sixth at state.

Shawver, who grew up in Newton and now lives in Monroe, is married to Jenny and has a step-daughter, Ellie, and son, Isaac.
