Beth Mitchell

After serving as a volunteer last season for the Grinnell College swimming and diving teams, Beth Mitchell has been named an assistant coach for the Pioneers.

Mitchell is from Grinnell, graduating in 2016 before heading to Kalamazoo College in Michigan. She swam there for half a season before retiring from the sport due to a bicep tear and necessary surgery.

Mitchell graduated from Kalamazoo in 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, and then attended Ohio University where she earned a master’s degree in Sports and Recreation with an emphasis in Coaching Education.

After retiring from swimming at Kalamazoo College, she turned her focus to coaching. She began with the Portage Aquatics Club (2017-20) and later served as head coach for Life Time Fitness Kansas in Overland Park (2021), assistant coach for Kalamazoo College (2021-22) and head coach for the Kalamazoo Masters team (2021-22).

Mitchell enjoyed plenty of success in the pool competing for Grinnell High, breaking the school record in the 100-yard backstroke and winning conference titles in the event in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Mitchell was named the 2013 Athlete of the Year and claimed the 2015 All-Academic Award.  She was also a multi-year state qualifier in the backstroke, finishing 13th in 2012, 21st in 2023 and 16th in 2014.
