Ted Schultz

Ted Schultz has been sports information director at Grinnell College since August 2007 after serving the previous 13 years as sports editor of the Clinton Herald in Clinton, Iowa.

Schultz is a native of Denison, Iowa, and attended Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mass communications while also competing for the Red Raiders’ track and cross country teams. 

Schultz began his newspaper career at the Atlantic News-Telegraph before moving to the Clinton Herald in 1994, where he stayed until coming to Grinnell College.

He has won numerous statewide writing and composing awards from professional organizations, including the Associated Press, Iowa Newspaper Association and the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association Media Award in 2007.

In 2009 he was presented the prestigious News Media Award for Excellence from the Iowa High School Athletic Association, an honor that is essentially the IHSAA’s Media Hall of Fame.

He used his extensive newspaper experience to co-instruct a sports journalism class at Grinnell College during the 2011-12 academic year.

In 2015, Schultz established a scholarship at his alma mater for an individual majoring in the field of communications.

Schultz is an active member of the College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA), serving as a mentor for the NCAA Division III Student Program at the 2025 national convention. Schultz also won a 2025 distrit award in the CSC's Fred Stabley Writing Contest.

Schultz served as media/information director for the 2012 and 2016 NCAA Division III National Indoor Track and Field Championships, as well as the 2014 and 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2025 NCAA D-III Regional Diving Championships.

In May of 2022, Grinnell College's seniors recognized his contributions to the school's students by declaring him an honorary member of the GC Class of 2022.

Additionally, he served as chair of the Midwest Conference Sports Information Directors from 2017 to 2021 and was a member of the league's Championships Committee. He was elected chair of the MWC Sports Information Directors again in 2023 and began serving as chair of the Championships Committee the following year.

Schultz has also been active in NCAA statistical technology, serving as a tester for the new NCAA Live Stats volleyball software in 2019 and as a member of the Controlled Release Group (CRG) for the NCAA Live Stats football software.

An avid bicyclist, Schultz has participated in RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa) 17 times since 2004. He also coached cross country and track at Clinton High School during his time in that city and in 2003 was named the state of Iowa's Assistant Cross Country Coach of the Year.

Schultz was a member of the Oakland Acres City Council from 2011 through 2019, and in 2014 was named the city's Mayor Pro Tem, He served as Oakland Acres' interim mayor during the final four months of his time on the Council.

He and his wife Marsha, have two dogs, Sherman and Spike.
