Theo Richter '23 became Grinnell College's first-ever Midwest Conference champion in the men's hammer, and set a school record in the process, on the opening day of the league outdoor track and field meet Friday.

Richter unleashed a best toss of 160 feet, 10 inches on his first throw of the finals at Strong Stadium to win the event by 20 inches. His performance shatters the previous Grinnell best of 152-2 by Chad Rapp in 2005. Incidentally, Rapp had been last member of the Grinnell men's team to win a league title in a field event, doing so in the discus in 2005.
