Pioneers' comeback falls short at Cornell

Box Score MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The Grinnell College football team came up with a furious rally, but it fell just short as the Pioneers lost a 32-27 decision at Cornell College Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers erupted for 20 points in the final period as they roared back. With the loss, Grinnell finishes at 2-7 in the Midwest Conference and 2-8 in all games. Cornell improved to 4-5 in the league and 4-6 in all games.

Sam Poulos '16 accounted for all four Grinnell touchdowns, running for scores of 51 and 1 yards and completing scoring passes to Kevin Hwang '14 and Max Jacobson '14.

Poulos completed 22-of-49 passes for 285 yards, while Aamir Walton '15 caught five passes. Jacobson, Harnak Mann '14, Jacob Meixler '14 and TJ Schaid '13 each caught four passes.

Defensively, David Ternes '15 had nine tackles and Colton Feller '14 and Drew Blumberg '13 had six each.

Grinnell trailed 13-0 after one period and 25-0 at halftime. In the third period, the Pioneers got on the board when Poulos completed a 28-yard TD pass to Hwang with 4:33 left. Poulos completed an 11-yard pass to Mann on the drive, which was capped by the TD and an extra point by Daniel Munger '15.

Cornell added a TD later in the period to go ahead 32-7.

From there it was all Grinnell, as Poulos ran for a 51-yard TD with 10:51 left and a 1-yard score at the 7:06 mark. Munger kicked both extra points.

Poulos had a 27-yard run to help set up his first touchdown. The second score was set up when Richard Renteria '15 intercepted a Juan Flores pass on the first play of Cornell's ensuing series. Poulos then hit Mann with a 27-yard strike before finishing off the drive seven plays later.

Poulos later hit Jacobson with a 22-yard scoring pass with 3:27 remaining, but the two-point conversion was no good. On the drive, Poulos completed a 10-yard pass to Schaid.

Grinnell got the ball back later but gave it up on downs as Cornell hung on for the win.
