Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – If there is an award for performing well in crunch time, the Grinnell College women's basketball team would win it hands-down.
For the second time in as many days, the Pioneers posted an overtime victory as they rallied to knock off Wartburg College 56-55 Sunday afternoon. This comes a day after Grinnell defeated Ripon College in two extra periods.
The victory was Grinnell's first in 13 tries against the Knights in a series dating back to 1980.
Cristal Coleman '15 forced overtime Sunday with a 3-pointer with 1 second to play, and then
Michelle Briggs '13 won the game when her jumper put the Pioneers ahead by the final margin with 3 seconds left in overtime.
Briggs and
Abby Jaeger '14 each had nine points for Grinnell, while Briggs grabbed 10 rebounds and
Tolu Alabi '13 added eight.
Alissa Hirsh '16 added five assists for the 3-2 Pioneers, Briggs blocked five shots and
Anne Boldt '16 came up with three steals.
Carly Jacobs had 12 points for the Knights, who fell to 2-3.
Wartburg led 18-11 at halftime and went up by as many as 13 at 36-23 in the second half. The hosts still led 40-32 with 3:22 left before Grinnell roared back. Boldt nailed consecutive 3-pointers at the 2:36 and 1:55 marks to make it 40-38.
She later hit a shot to tie the game at 40-all with :16 remaining. Jacobs drained a 3-pointer to put Wartburg ahead 43-40 with :07 left, but Coleman answered with a trey to force the extra period.
Wartburg went up by three points immediately in overtime and later pushed the margin to four. It was still a four-point game with :34 left before Hirsh sank a 3-pointer with :26 left to make it 55-54.
After a pair of missed free throws by Wartburg, Briggs hit a jumper with :03 left to secure the win.
The Pioneers play at Monmouth College Tuesday in Midwest Conference play. Action begins at 5 p.m.
