Pioneers rally from 15 down in 2nd half to top Monmouth

Box Score MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Grinnell College men's basketball team overcame a 15-point halftime deficit to knock off Monmouth College 107-99 in Midwest Conference action Tuesday night.

With the win, the Pioneers remained perfect in MWC play at 3-0 while moving to 6-1 overall. Monmouth dipped to 1-2 in the MWC and 1-4 overall.

Aaron Levin '14 of Grinnell led all scorers with 23 points, hitting 7-of-13 tries from 3-point land. Others in double figures were Griffin Lentsch '13 with 14, Jack Taylor '15 with 12 and Joe Rogers '13 with 10.

Patrick Maher '14 dished out 10 assists and Taylor had six. Marques Valdez '13 grabbed seven rebounds, Brian McManamy '13 had two blocks and Maher came up with three steals.

The Pioneers trailed 52-43 at halftime and fell behind 64-49 with 17:50 left in the game. They then gradually chipped away, making it an eight-point game at 70-62 with 13:38.

Grinnell then went on a 10-2 run to tie things, as Lentsch hit a jumper, McManamy sank a 3-pointer, Jack Adams '13 made a jumper and Luke Yeager '15 nailed a trey.

The hosts followed with a four-point run to go ahead 76-72 with 10:18 left, but Grinnell answered with a critical 13-point run to take command for good.

Levin hit consecutive 3-pointers to begin things, Tague Zachary '15 and Lentsch each sank a pair of free throws and McManamy drained a trey to put the Pioneers ahead 85-76 with 6:16 remaining.

The visitors never looked back en route to earning the victory.

Grinnell travels to De Pere, Wis., for a contest at St. Norbert College on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
