ST. PETER, Minn. – The Grinnell College men's tennis team worked overtime Saturday, using a pair of super-tiebreaker wins to top Macalester College 5-4.

Tracy Johnson '16 posted a 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 victory at No. 4 singles for the Pioneers, while Rob Storrick '15 won 3-6, 6-0, 10-8 at No. 6. Also winning in singles was Emilio Gomez '15, who posted a 6-1, 6-2 decision at the second spot.

In doubles, Grinnell's No. 1 tandem of Elliott Czarnecki '15 and Gomez won 8-5 while Storrick and Daniel Nellis '13 won 8-5 at No. 3.

“I'm pleased with our victory against Macalester because we were put in a difficult situation and responded with pretty solid play down the stretch,” said Grinnell coach Andy Hamilton, whose team moved to 11-4 with the win. “To play five super-tiebreakers shows just how close it was. We're happy to come away with the victory.”

Earlier in the day, the Pioneers – who are ranked 14th in the Central Region – dropped an 8-1 decision to fourth-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College. Grinnell's win was a 6-3, 6-4 decision by Storrick at No. 6 singles.

Grinnell hosts Augustana College and Nebraska Wesleyan University next Saturday at the Charles Benson Bear '39 Recreation and Athletic Center.
