GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's men's tennis team sailed to a pair of victories Saturday at the Charles Benson Bear '39 Recreation and Athletic Center Field House, topping NCAA Division-III foe Augustana College 7-2 and shutting out Nebraska Wesleyan University 9-0.

In the win over Augustana, Grinnell swept doubles play with the teams of Elliott Czarnecki '15-Emilio Gomez '15 (8-1), Colin Johnson '13-Tracy Johnson '16 (8-6) and C.J. Ray '16-Benjamin Charney '15 (8-0).

In singles, Grinnell won at Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 6 with Gomez (6-0, 6-0), Daniel Nellis '13 (7-5, 6-3), Tracy Johnson (6-3, 6-4) and Charlie Wilhelm '15 (6-1, 6-2).

In the match with Nebraska Wesleyan, doubles winners were the teams of Colin Johnson-Tracy Johnson (8-0), Charney-Ray (8-3) and Sam Catanzaro '16-Bryson Cale '16 (8-1).

In singles, winners were Gomez (6-0, 6-0), Nellis (6-2, 6-1), Wilhelm (6-3, 6-0), Charney (6-0, 6-0), Colin Johnson (6-0, 6-2) and Rob Storrick '15 (6-1, 6-0).

“I was particularly pleased with our doubles play today,” said Grinnell coach Andy Hamilton, whose team is 14-4 and ranked 14th in the NCAA Division III Central Region. “For us to sweep all doubles matches is a good sign we're growing in that area as a team. Individually, Emilio Gomez didn't lose any games in singles while even moving up to No. 1 in one of the matches, so that's a great day for him.

“We continue to see Ben Charney play great tennis, not only in doubles but also on the singles court,” he added. “I anticipate he'll get more and more playing time in the main lineup and we're excited we can exercise more depth with him in the mix.”

Grinnell's next action will be during spring break in Orlando, Fla.
